Shepaug R. - Roxbury Falls 2006-01-15

On Sunday morning 2006-01-15, the Shepaug was already falling sharply after pegging the USGS meter at Woodville Saturday night at something well over 1000 cubic feet per second, but the Roxbury Falls were still pretty amazing. At about this time, the Woodville guage was reading in the 500s.

Minor Bridge Road runs E-W through map center; South Street N-S at right. Shepaug R. flows N-S through gorge above Minor Bridge, then spills over ledges and rock gardens down to the flatwater of Lake Lillinonah.
Above the gorge is all private property. Below the bridge there is a Roxbury town park (river right just below the bridge) and a town boat launch at flatwater (at lower map center). Town constables may tag or fine or tow away cars that don't display a town dump sticker at either place. Welcome to Roxbury. The obvious grade at the left (river right) and dotted line above is the old Shepaug Railroad alignment, impassable here with sections on private property.

  • The mid-January thaw and rains pegged the USGS gauge at Woodville, about 26 miles, one large and many small tribs above Roxbury Falls. The pictures in this gallery were taken about 10am Sunday January 15, 500-600 cubic feet per second. For height fans, it peaked just under 4 feet.

  • Looking downstream from Minor Bridge. The river splits in two around a rocky island, and above 800-900 cfs say, a middle channel appears to open crossing left to right.

  • Looking upstream from right bank. The top of the island is at the right of the photo.
Right channel (near side) is kind of twisty with few eddies. Left channel (beyond) is not as twisty, has a few drops, but few eddies.

  • More or less the same view from a little further below. The crossing channel is at the right in the middle distance, pretty bony at 600 cfs.

  • Runout of the right channel, island beyond. Saturday night, the island was almost completely innundated. The snow started early morning.
